Psychological Impact of Cancer Risk Assessment: Anxiety, Depression and Distress in an Italian Sample

Purpose: Evaluating whether and how anxious depressive symptoms change from prior to Oncological Genetic Counseling (OGC) one month following BRCA genetic test result. Short-term psychological impact of disclosure in an Italian sample was also assessed. Methods: 106 natives completed Hospital Anxiety Depression scale (HADs) both before accessing OGC (t1) their result (t2). In t2 they the translation Multidimensional Cancer Risk Assessment (MICRA). Results: An overall reduction HADs scores over time BRCA-carriers observed. Higher distress median values (MICRA) were found carriers than non-carriers. Discussion: carriers, simultaneous presence a anxiety/depression greater should be explained basing on Post- Traumatic-Growth studies cancer patients. Being carrier may represent explanation for disease, allow patients access specific riskreduction programs.
